How to wake up happy

fried-eggs-846367_1280I can get up early, but I’m certainly not going to be happy about it. I just don’t understand how folks can get up in the morning, fit in a long run, shower and create a gourmet-insta-ready porridge all before work. In the wise words of Sweet Brown – ‘Ain’t nobody got time for that.’

However, your morning routine can have a wider impact on the rest of your day. Ever noticed that the same people who manage to fit more into their morning are also the people who tend to have their life together? It’s a sad fact, whilst we can grimace at the thought of a 5am alarm, the benefits speak for themselves.

It’s something we all secretly aspire to and I know myself, after many failed attempts, waking up happy is actually hard to do. That’s why I spoke to some amazing women who do this day in day out to find out their secrets to happy morning vibes – even on a Monday!

Make sure you’re heading to the right environment
Prep starts the night before, just before you leave your desk at 5. “I always tidy my desk the night before so I don’t feel overwhelmed with papers in the morning and have a more zen working environment!” Director of Mahi Naturals, Meghna Patel, clearly has a lot on her plate with a business to run! Yet it’s the simplest things that make a big difference to your day and no matter how busy she might be, she never skips this step. After all, a tidy desk makes a tidy mind!

Plan ahead
Ever had that impending feeling of doom of not knowing what the next day will bring? Take back control by planning ahead. Super busy co-founder of Fit PR, Sig Watkins, says: “Always make a list the night before, so you go to bed feeling organised – you always wake up happy!”

I couldn’t agree more! Not only does this help you prepare for the next day, it’s sure to help you rest better at night and quell any anxious thoughts too.

Get up as soon as you wake up
Don’t you dare hit that snooze button! You’re secretly conditioning yourself to continue sleeping when you hear the sound of your alarm, which isn’t going to get you anywhere.

I once read this tip to psychologically train yourself to get out of bed as soon as you wake up. An hour before you go to bed, get under the covers and relax. Set an alarm for 10 minutes and when it goes off, get up immediately and go about your evening. After 5 minutes of keeping busy you can rinse and repeat the process a few times before you go back to bed.

I the morning, your brain will automatically know to repeat the process, making it much easier for you to get out of bed!

Tell yourself to seize the day
I live by affirmations. An affirmation is when you tell yourself you can achieve something so many times that you actually start to build the self-belief necessary to reach your goals.

The truth is you have to be your own biggest fan girl and I’m not the only person who believes this. Janey Lee Grace, author of ‘You are the Brand’, suggests: “Do the ‘power pose’. Stand strong with your feet rooted to the ground, smile and say ‘I am enough’, it puts you in a great positive frame of mind. The act of adopting a stance helps to give you confidence for your day.”

goodTurn the cold tap on
“I would suggest a nice hot shower which you end with a few blasts of icy water! It really wakes me up and makes me feel more energized for the day.” Sarah Lambley, Director of Fit For Keeps, is definitely more brave than I am. However, there are plenty of benefits to a cold shower in the morning. Studies have shown that it could improve the longevity of your life!

Make a morning playlist
I have to tip-toe around my apartment as I wake up 2hrs before my flatmate, but you don’t have to do the same. As long as you’re not waking the neighbours, there’s no reason why your morning can’t be enriched by the sweet symphony of Spice Girls – ‘Wannabe’.

Choose power ballads and obscenely sweet pop songs to get you in the mood for a fantastic day ahead. Save Eminem – ‘8 Mile’ for the days when you have a really big pitch to attend. It’s all about picking the right songs for your schedule.

So even if you flop out of bed with all the grace of a sealion, you can seize your morning for a happy outlook all through the day!

I might give the snooze thing a go, especially as I’m going to be conditioning myself to get up at 6:15 next week! Argh!

I definitely agree with the playlist idea! I have music pumping as soon as I’m out of bed to get me in the mood to start the day! I don’t think I could deal with the cold shower though… That I can live without!

I wish I could do this! I have always been able to hop out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off, but the idea of anything earlier than 7am scares me

Same here Kaye! I was getting up at 4am once to fit job apps in before my usual 9-5 job. It was truly awful, haha!

I do some of these however I just can’t have a shower in the morning… I need to wake up very slowly and this would just give me a stroke!
However I have my own routine and the morning is one of my favourite moments of the day!

Love the idea of a playlist!! I’ve defintely not got my shizz together in the mornings, even though I’m a mum & my daughter is usually awake between 7.30-8.30 … And even if I do get up early I sit around all bloody morning doing nothing! I will be taking some of these tips on board!

  12. February 4, 2016 / 1:20 pm

  17. February 21, 2016 / 7:51 pm

Luckily I find early mornings much easier than late nights, but it’s definitely due to little things like these points that I manage! Waking earlier allows me to fit more into my morning and avoid that rushing around while half asleep thing!

You make some really great points. My alarm clock doesn’t exist. Mine is in the form of a 3yr old squishy human that takes over my bed at 6am and demands breakfast or kids TV lol Good job I’m a ‘morning’ person.

I always make sure I have a list of things to do the next day, otherwise I wake up thinking of things I must do.

I think that “Get up as soon as you wake up” is the toughest one for me. I like drinking my coffee in bed checking emails and socials. I know it’s wroooong! ;))
